Our History

It was the year 1963 when the parents in Kansbahal were not able to send the children to school because all schools were far away in Rourkela. It was at this time that Mrs. Chamberlin, an Anglo-Indian lady collected all the small children of the officers of Utkal Machinery Limited, Kansbahal and started a nursery. This nursery slowly developed into a school with the support of the management. By this time a few other teachers like Mrs. Fernandes, Mrs. Mitra and Mrs. Muralidas had joined this English School venture.
In order to bless the children with knowledge, values, manners, etiquettes to face the world and for the progress and development of the institution, the management decided to entrust the noble task of this tiny institution into the hands of missionaries. So the authorities of Utkal Machinery Limited approached Rt. Rev. Bishop Herman Westerman SVD, the Bishop of Catholic diocese of Sambalpur. After due consideration and discussions between Bishop Herman Westerman, Fr. Marian Zelazek SVD, Secretary, Catholic School Committee and Mr. K. Aselmann, General Manager, Utkal Machinery Limited, it was decided on 7th May 1966 that the North Colony School would be taken over by the C. S. C Kesramal, with effect from 15th June 1966.

Bishop Westerman invited Mother Anastasia H. M., Superior General of the congregation of the Handmaids of Mary and handed over the school to their care. Sr. Irene and Sr. Florilla H. M along with two sisters for Odia Medium School came to Kansbahal and started their work. They were provided a residence just near the school and had the tremendous support of the management.
With the coming of sisters, the strength of the school increased year after year. All the earlier teachers continued their jobs while many others like Mrs. Narsimhan, Mrs. J. Kujur, Mrs. Dhawan, Mrs. Sandhu, Mr. Mandal and Mr George Kutty joined the group. The school started functioning in a full fledged manner with the proper process of admission, maintenance of records etc.
Since then, the school has been functioning very well under the care and guidance of the sisters of St. Theresa Province and support of the present Larsen & Toubro Limited management. It’s a matter of pride that founder of L&T, Mr Henning Holck Larsen visited the school on several occasions. It reflects the immense concern that he too held for children. To accommodate the growing number of students the building was first shifted to South Colony in 1976 and then again to the present building behind Montfort School (at present DAV School) in the year 2001.
The school has grown from strength to strength since inception. At present we have Five Hundred and Four students out of whom about 80 students leave us to study in the High School and more than 100 are admitted every year.
Since the year 2025 Nursery classes have been introduced to provide a strong foundation for early childhood education. The school expanded its pre-primary section with the introduction of UKG in 2026.
